Far, far and straight. Swakopmund to Windhoek from it are almost 400 km. It's burning hot on the trail and "only" African air conditioning (or window). The villages on the connector you can count on one hand. They consist mainly of gas station, take-away and coffee shop, high-fenced property for whites and Oneroom - huts for the blacks (I do not know if one may say so ...). Swakop stands on the other hand, something that one has the impression of being suddenly in a completely different country
. The city is right - and completely accurate! - Between the sea and the Namib.
